Yes, in the starting area, the danger of life is very low, but that changes as soon as you get into the other biomes and get it there with skeletons, trolls and other dangerous creatures.

no PVP compulsion

Valheim can be played both solo and co-op up to nine friends. You can change with your character arbitrarily between your world and those of your teammates, as figures and worlds are stored separately. There is also a PVP option, but each player can switch on or off for themselves the PVP. So if you do not feel like it, you just do not activate the feature and then no other player can harm you.
