Already at the start of the Xbox 360 in 2005, Microsoft had offered two console models (Xbox 360 Arcade and Pro), which, however, did not distinguish themselves technically except for a few details. So experience with this concept is already available.

Which model is better?

When it comes to the pure technical performance data, the Series S of Series X is probably clearly inferior, especially in the graphics chip that brings power to the scales at the Series X Knap 12 Teraflops. This service is likely to be much more manageable at the Series S.

On technical terms, this question is answered quickly. Of course, the pure cost-benefit factor is individual for each player and each player, which is why Series S for some quite quite a better overall package can turn out. Because who does not need the latest technology standard anyway, has little in the square next to or under the TV and its games only buys digital, for which the Xbox Series S offers a low-priced entry into the Next Gen division of Microsoft.

That's in the latest update (May 2021)

As with the Xbox One, the Xbox Series S also gets regular updates for the system software. The last update was published in May 2021 .

Quick Resume improved : The most important feature was improvements for Quick Resume. With the function it is possible to start a game, to play another and then return to the first game exactly at the point where you have paused.

On the paper Quick Resume has also very good, only was absolutely not clear which game Quick Resume has and which games on your console currently use the function. Therefore, there is now finally a manager who indicates which game is just stored in Quick Resume. In addition, the charging time was shortened when starting the games.

Alpha update brings change, but not for Xbox Series S

Anyone participating in the Alpha program for updates on the Xbox will notice little differences on the Xbox Series S.

4K in the menu only for Series X : Because the big change is the representation of the dashboards. Only on the Xbox Series X are displayed with the update the menus in 4K. When and whether this change will be available for Xbox Series S, is not yet known.

Smaller changes, such as system stability improvements or other languages for the dashboard, but of course also relate to the Series S.

Xbox Series S: Performance and Specs

Already since the first rumors, it was clear that the Xbox Series S would act by a technically covered model, which can not range the performance data of the Xbox Series X. Technically, however, the console still does not have to hide.

  • No drive: The Xbox Series S does not play discs, but completely relies on downloads.
  • Fast SSD with 512 GB: Like the Xbox Series X, a SSD is installed, which allows fast loading times and changing between games during operation.
  • 1440p at 120 fps: Fast frame rates creates the Xbox Series S up to a resolution of 1440p, which is also known as QHD.
  • Raytracing on board: One of the most promising graphic features of the next generation is also supported by the S.
  • Variable rate Shading and variable Refresh rate: Similar to your big sister The Xbox Series S can enhance GPU efficiency (VRS) and adjusts image repeat rates via HDMI 2.1 to the displays designed for it.

No 4k? The Xbox Series S is basically not designed for 4K resolution, but is able to play media content in this resolution or to count on games in it. However, it is not a native 4K resolution, but this should only complain about the trained eye. To achieve the 60 fps, some games will also run at a significantly lower resolution, which is sometimes even below 1080p.

Memory upgradable: The SSD in the Series S is comparatively small with 512 GB. Therefore, the memory can be expanded with specially developed cards. How exactly what works, you read here.

Ideal for Game Pass: With its purely digital alignment, the Xbox Series S is also optimally suitable for Microsoft's Game Pass. With the paid gaming service, you have access to several titles from the Xbox library, which you can then download and play without further costs as long as they are part of the service.

Downward compatibility of Xbox Series S

For the announcement of the downward compatibility of the Xbox One, Microsoft earned a lot of cheers from the community in 2015. Since then, new Xbox original and Xbox 360 games have been added to the program, according to Microsoft, the feature is very popular with the players.

Therefore, there will be a backward compatibility feature with the Series S. Already during the E3 2019, Microsoft announced:

Learn four content generations like never before.

The first unique indication of the 4Xbox generations (Series X included). From the launch path gets access to your Xbox One games and all Xbox / Xbox 360 titles that were already on the Xbox ONE backwards compatible.

Cool: For many AK games, there will be improvements such as subsequently inserted HDR or higher frame rates. We have examined the downward compatibility on the Xbox Series X:

In addition, the transition will be made easy for us, because other features are taken over, including:

  • Gamerscore
  • Boy list
  • Achievements
  • Storage Stiles

Improvements of old games: Developers should in future be able to implement improved boot and loading times, to ensure more stable frame rates, offer a higher resolution of the old games and generally screw the graphics performance upwards.

Dashboard The Xbox Series S

Microsoft uses the same dashboard for the Xbox Series S user interface, which can be found on the Xbox One after the recent update. However, the surface with the Velocity Architecture of the console and the SSD memory feels significantly flotter and direct. Functionally, a few new options have come to put something the possibility of setting dynamic backgrounds.

What about VR at the Series S?

In the current console generation, Virtual Reality (VR) does not matter for Microsoft, here you have left the field completely Sony and PlayStation VR. So far, VR is on consoles but anyway a niche as a niche.

Contradictory information: That this is not changing at the next generation can already be read out from the previous rumors and analyst statements.

For, for example, Lewis Ward of IDC assumes that in the context of its developer purchases in the next generation, Microsoft will also be forwarded to VR areas, Microsoft's Mike Ybarra on Twitter described VR technology as not worthwhile so far. Also, patents as well as from a VR mat probably only interpret that Microsoft experiments with ideas, but there is no implementation yet.

This is further supported by a statement by Xbox boss Phil Spencer. According to him, the focus of the next Xbox is not on VR because only a few players would be interested in and VR is a concept that players isolate and less with others.

The Xbox boss has slightly released the Xbox boss, but still clearly emphasizes that there will be no VR headset for the launch of the Xbox Series X / S.

For whom is the Xbox Series S?

Microsoft places the S model as the Xbox One S generation previously as an entry-level model in the new generation. Anyone who can do without discs and does not always need the best technology on the current limit, with the Series S is a particularly priced attractive option to play all current titles with very good performance in the future.
